Kashmir is one of those rare places that reinvents itself every season. The question isn't really whether to visit — it's when, because the valley you'll find in April is a completely different world from the one in December. Here's our local, month-by-month breakdown.
Spring (March – May): Tulips & Blossom
Spring is when Kashmir wakes up. The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden in Srinagar — Asia's largest — blooms with over a million tulips, usually late March to mid-April. Almond and cherry blossoms blanket the orchards, and the weather is mild and ideal for sightseeing and shikara rides.
Summer (June – August): Lush & Pleasant
When the rest of India swelters, Kashmir stays cool and green. This is peak season for families and honeymooners — Gulmarg's meadows are emerald, Pahalgam's rivers run full, and the high-altitude road to Ladakh opens up. Book accommodation early, as it's the busiest window.
Autumn (September – November): Golden Chinar
Our personal favourite. The chinar trees turn fiery red and gold, the air is crisp, and the tourist crowds thin out. Photographers love the light, and you'll get better rates than in summer.
Winter (December – February): Snow & Skiing
Gulmarg transforms into one of Asia's best ski destinations, with the Gondola running over deep powder. Srinagar can get snowfall too, and a houseboat by a frozen-edged Dal Lake is pure magic — just pack serious warm layers.
